Why One-to-One Physiotherapy, Not a Group Class, for Chronic Pain

In a group class, everyone does the same movement. In chronic pain, that same movement produces a completely different response from person to person.

Clients coming in with back, neck or widespread pain sometimes ask "would a group Pilates class work too?" The answer depends on the nature of the pain.

The limit of a group class

In a group setting, the instructor can't watch each participant one-to-one to see which movement is helping and which is triggering pain. The same movement can be therapeutic for one person and a trigger for another.

What one-to-one gives you

Assessment reveals exactly what a specific movement does for that person; the programme is adjusted accordingly, in real time. Faulty technique is corrected immediately, and if a movement triggers pain, it's changed on the spot.

The two can work together

One-to-one care during an acute or complex period, followed by a sustainable group activity once pain has stabilised, can complement each other. The order matters.
