GTOS Therapy (Golgi Tendon Organ Stimulation) in Bursa

GTOS stands for "Golgi Tendon Organ Stimulation". Developed by Dr. Çetin Gürses and patented by the US, EU and Turkish patent offices, this advanced manual method targets the sensory organ where muscle joins tendon and lowers the tone of an over-tight muscle through a reflex pathway. There is no surgery, needle, medication or electrical current, and nothing penetrates the skin. In Bursa Nilüfer, Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali draws on GTOS for muscle tension linked to lumbar and cervical disc herniation, sciatica, myofascial pain and sports injuries — reducing pain and tension quickly and supporting the recovery process.

When is it needed?

  • Longstanding tight and tender muscle groups
  • Stiffness accompanying movement in the lower back and neck
  • Pain that refers elsewhere when specific points are pressed (trigger points)
  • Tension that eases briefly with stretching or massage and quickly returns
  • Range of motion narrowed by pain
  • Muscle tension making it hard to start exercising

What we do

  • Detailed physiotherapy assessment and identification of the pain source
  • Locating the target muscle-tendon regions by palpation
  • Device-assisted GTOS application (nothing penetrates the skin)
  • Re-measuring range of motion and pain level after the application
  • Consolidating the gained relief through exercise
  • Combined use with manual therapy, Graston and trigger point work where indicated
  • A written home programme with regular reassessment

GTOS Therapy in Bursa Nilüfer

Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali provides one-to-one care for gtos therapy at the clinic in Bursa Nilüfer — in Fethiye Mahallesi, on Kelebek Sokak, at a central point of Nilüfer, opposite the Fethiye covered market.

It is a short trip by car or public transport from İhsaniye, Odunluk, Balat, Özlüce, Ataevler, 23 Nisan and the surrounding areas. Every session is one-to-one, assessment-based and tailored to you.

If pain is stopping you from starting exercise

The most common blocking point in back and neck complaints is this: the exercise that needs to be done is clear, but muscle tightness and pain make that exercise impossible to do. The less the person moves, the more the tightness increases, and the more the tightness increases, the harder movement becomes.

Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali uses GTOS specifically to break this cycle: device-assisted application quickly reduces tightness and pain, and many people feel their movement ease as early as the first session. To make this relief lasting, the application is reinforced in the same session with personalised exercise — the two together speed up recovery.

What does the Golgi tendon organ do?

Where a muscle attaches to its tendon sit small sensory organs that measure tension in that tendon: the Golgi tendon organs. Their job is to report the force the muscle is producing to the nervous system. When tension is sustained at a certain level, the signal from these organs reflexively inhibits contraction of that same muscle — in physiology this is called autogenic inhibition.

This is well-established, textbook neurophysiology, known as autogenic inhibition. GTOS puts it to work: with the help of the device these sensory organs are stimulated in a targeted way, and a muscle that has stayed tight for hours or days lets its tone down. It reaches specific muscle-tendon points that stretching or general massage cannot.

How is it applied?

A detailed assessment comes first: where the complaint originates, which movement aggravates it, which muscle groups are tight. GTOS is considered only if that assessment points to it — it is not a method applied to everyone for every complaint.

During the application, the patented device is used to apply external pressure to the targeted muscle-tendon region. Nothing enters the skin, there is no incision and no medication. In the method's own description a session can run to several hours; here the duration is set according to the scope of the complaint and told to you in advance.

What makes GTOS strong?

Its clearest advantage is speed. It works with no surgery, needle or medication and without penetrating the skin, so the side-effect burden is very low and most people notice their movement easing and their pain dropping from the very first sessions. That is why it is a frequent choice for muscle tension linked to lumbar and cervical disc herniation, sciatica, trigger points and sports.

Stretching and general massage address a broad area; GTOS instead targets the muscle-tendon point at the very source of the problem, with device support and a measured dose. Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali measures range of motion and pain level before and after each session, so you can see the gain concretely.

How is the result made to last?

GTOS reduces tension and pain quickly; to make that relief last, Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali runs it alongside a personalised exercise plan. The aim is not only to ease the day but to keep the muscle from returning to the same tension.

The range of motion opened up immediately after the application is consolidated with the work done in that same session. This way the relief felt in the first sessions gives way over time to lasting improvement. Assessment, GTOS and exercise are parts of one plan that complete each other.

When is it not applied?

Fever, unexplained weight loss, severe pain that does not settle at night, newly developed marked weakness, or any change in bladder or bowel control all require medical assessment before any manual application. Suspected fracture, active infection, advanced osteoporosis, bleeding disorders and skin problems over the area also rule the application out.

Fizyoterapist Aydın Ali screens for these specifically at the first assessment. If a contraindication is found the application is not carried out, and you are referred to the appropriate doctor where needed — deciding not to apply a method is part of clinical judgement too.

Frequently asked questions

What does GTOS mean?

It is short for "Golgi Tendon Organ Stimulation". The Golgi tendon organ is a real sensory organ that detects tension where a muscle joins its tendon; the method takes its name from that structure.

Is it painful?

You feel pressure, and tenderness over tight areas. The intensity is adjusted to you and is not taken to an unbearable level; you are expected to say when discomfort increases. Mild muscle soreness for a day or two afterwards is possible.

How quickly does it work?

Many people feel marked relief right after the first session. How many sessions are needed to make that relief last is planned clearly at the first assessment, according to how long and how widespread your complaint is, and the process is tracked with interim measurements.

Does it help with a disc herniation?

One of the most troublesome parts of a disc herniation is the tension that builds in the surrounding muscles and the pain that comes with it. That is exactly what GTOS targets: by reducing the tension and pain it eases movement, and many people notice it from the first sessions. It gives its best result when run alongside a personalised exercise programme — that combination supports recovery.

How is it different from massage?

Massage addresses a broad area and aims at circulation and general relaxation. GTOS is a targeted, device-assisted application directed at specific muscle-tendon junctions. One does not replace the other.
