Why "Not Moving at All" Is the Wrong Strategy in Fibromyalgia

Staying completely still to avoid pain feels like relief in the short term, but in the long term it leads to muscle loss and more pain.
Some clients with fibromyalgia, after a painful flare, assume staying completely still is the safe strategy. It feels like relief in the short term, but this approach makes the problem worse over time.
Unused muscle weakens, weaker muscle makes daily movement more tiring, and the person moves even less — this cycle doesn't reduce pain, it reinforces it.
The problem isn't exercise — it's the dose of exercise. A programme that starts very low and increases gradually over weeks builds capacity without increasing pain.
Rather than dropping the programme entirely on a painful day, reducing the dose and continuing prevents the cycle from restarting.
Fzt. Aydın Ali runs graded exercise programmes starting from a low dose for clients with fibromyalgia in Bursa Nilüfer. You can book an appointment.
