ESWT (shockwave therapy) is a method used for heel spurs and chronic tendon complaints that triggers healing with sound waves. It isn't applied alone — it's combined with exercise.
ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) is a physiotherapy method that sends high-energy sound waves into the tissue through a device to trigger the healing process. It's chosen as part of an exercise programme for tendon complaints — like a heel spur, tennis elbow, or Achilles tendon issues — that haven't gone away for weeks and don't resolve with rest alone.
ESWT is most commonly used for morning pain caused by a heel spur and plantar fasciitis, for tennis and golfer's elbow, for Achilles tendon complaints that haven't resolved for a long time, and for calcified tendon pain in the shoulder. Their common feature is being chronic tendon complaints that don't resolve on their own with rest.
Some impact sensation and a degree of discomfort may be felt in the area during the application. The dose is adjusted to a level the person can tolerate; the intensity is lowered if discomfort is felt.
The number of sessions varies depending on how long the complaint has lasted and the area involved; usually a few sessions are planned, spaced about a week apart. The response to the previous session is reassessed before each new one.
ESWT isn't applied in situations like pregnancy, a bleeding disorder, active infection in the area to be treated, or suspected tumour. That's why a detailed history is taken before application, and a physician's opinion is sought when needed.
No. For ESWT's effect to be lasting, it's used together with loading and strengthening exercises; it isn't offered as a standalone solution. Avoiding heavy loading in the first days after application is recommended; return to sport or intense activity is planned individually after assessment.

Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation
Chiropractic and manual therapy are often confused. Both are done with the hands, but their approaches and frameworks differ.

Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation
The sharp heel pain on the first step in the morning is often assumed to be a heel spur. But the real name for this condition is plantar fasciitis, and the two aren't the same thing.

Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation
Flat feet aren't a disease in most people and cause no complaint. The real question is whether they're leading to a problem.

Shock wave therapy for chronic tendon and heel complaints, used as part of the programme.
For heel pain that bites on the first step of the morning: shockwave, load management and a graded strengthening programme.
For pain on the outer elbow that flares with gripping: a graded tendon-loading programme that rebuilds grip strength.
