In people new to exercise, knee pain usually doesn't come from the knee itself — it comes from a sudden jump in distance.
Knee pain is a common complaint in people who start walking or light jogging for their health. Its source is usually not damage in the knee — it's how quickly the load has increased.
In a body that's been inactive for a while, when distance or duration increases by more than 10% a week, the tissues around the knee can't keep up and pain develops.
Worn-out shoes and walking constantly on hard surfaces are factors that increase load on the knee — and they're often overlooked.
If the muscles around the hip are weak, the knee can drift slightly inward during walking; over time that can lead to pain at the front of the knee.
Increasing distance gradually and adding hip-strengthening exercises noticeably reduces pain in most cases.
